The molecular basis of male fertility remains unclear, especially in chickens, where decades of genetic selection increased male fertility variability as a side effect. As transcription and translation are highly limited in sperm, proteins are key molecules defining their functionality, making proteomic approaches one of the most adequate methods to investigate sperm capacity. In this context, it is interesting to combine complementary proteomic approaches to maximize the identification of proteins related to sperm-fertilizing ability. In the present study, we aimed at identifying proteins related to fertility in meat-type roosters, showing fertility variability. Fertile roosters (fertility rates higher than 70% after artificial insemination) differed from subfertile roosters (fertility rates lower than 40%) in their sperm mass motility. Fertile and subfertile sperm protein contents were compared using two complementary label-free quantitative proteomic methods: Intact Cell MALDI-TOF-Mass Spectrometry and GeLC-MS/MS. Combining the two strategies, 57 proteins were identified as differentially abundant. Most of them were described for the first time as differentially abundant according to fertility in this species. These proteins were involved in various molecular pathways including flagellum integrity and movement, mitochondrial functions, sperm maturation, and storage in female tract as well as oocyte-sperm interaction. Collectively, our data improved our understanding of chicken sperm biology by revealing new actors involved in the complexity of male fertility that depends on multiple cell functions to reach optimal rates. This explains the inability of reductionist in vitro fertility testing in predicting male fertility and suggests that the use of a combination of markers is a promising approach.

Male subfertility causes are very varied and sometimes related to post-gonadic maturation disruption, involving seminal plasma constituents. Among them, extracellular vesicles are involved in key exchanges with sperm in mammals. However, in birds, the existence of seminal extracellular vesicles is still debated. The aim of the present work was first to clarify the putative presence of extracellular vesicles in the seminal plasma of chickens, secondly to characterize their size and protein markers in animals showing different fertility, and finally to make preliminary evaluations of their interactions with sperm. We successfully isolated extracellular vesicles from seminal plasma of males showing the highest differences in semen quality and fertility by using ultracentrifugation protocol (pool of 3 ejaculates/rooster, n =3/condition). Size characterization performed by electron microscopy revealed a high proportion of small extracellular vesicles (probably exosomes) in chicken seminal plasma. Smaller extracellular vesicles appeared more abundant in fertile than in subfertile roosters, with a mean diameter of 65.12 and 77.18 nm, respectively. Different protein markers of extracellular vesicles were found by western blotting (n = 6/condition). Among them, HSP90A was significantly more abundant in fertile than in subfertile males. In co-incubation experiments (n = 3/condition), extracellular vesicles enriched seminal fractions of fertile males showed a higher capacity to be incorporated into fertile than into subfertile sperm. Sperm viability and motility were impacted by the presence of extracellular vesicles from fertile males. In conclusion, we successfully demonstrated the presence of extracellular vesicles in chicken seminal plasma, with differential size, protein markers and putative incorporation capacity according to male fertility status.

In birds, oviductal cells play a crucial role in the storage of sperm via cell-to-cell communication including extracellular vesicles (EV). We developed a culture of oviductal organoids enriched in sperm storage tubules (SSTorg) to demonstrate the release of EV. SSTorg were cultured for 24 h and added to live (LV), frozen (FZ) and lysed (LY) avian sperm, seminal plasma (SP), avian sperm conditioned medium (CM), or bovine sperm (BV). Western blot demonstrated that SSTorg contained EV protein markers, valosin-containing protein (VCP), heat shock proteins (HSP90AA1, HSPA8), and annexins (ANXA2, A4, A5). Co-culture with LV significantly decreased the intracellular level of all these proteins except HSPA8. Immunohistochemistry confirmed this result for VCP and ANXA4. LY, CM, SP and BV had no effect on the intracellular level of these proteins, whereas FZ induced a decrease in ANXA2, A4 and A5. In culture media, VCP and HSP90AA1 signals were detected in the presence of LV, FZ, BV, LY, CM and SP, but no ANXA4 signal was observed in the presence of FZ and SP. ANXA2 and A5 were only detected in the presence of LV. The most abundant EV were less than 150 nm in diameter. ANXA4 and A5 were more abundant in EV isolated from the SSTorg culture medium. This study provides a useful culture system for studying interactions between SST cells and sperm. We demonstrated the release of EV by SSTorg in vitro, and its regulation by sperm. This may be of crucial importance for sperm during storage in hens.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effects of probiotics use, compared with placebo, in pediatric patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), using laboratorial and ultrasonographic parameters as outcomes. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed through MEDLINE and Lilacs databases. The articles selected were randomized controlled clinical trials published until November 2018, without any language restriction, dealing with pediatric patients with NAFLD. Patients were divided into 2 groups. One group received probiotic therapy and the other group, only received placebo. The primary outcome evaluated was the difference between the serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) before and after receiving probiotics or placebo. The secondary outcomes evaluated were the serum aspartate aminotransferase levels, body mass index, serum triglycerides, waist circumference and level of liver steatosis on the ultrasonography. RESULTS: A total of 46 articles were recovered, and 3 articles were included in the qualitative analysis, totaling 128 patients. Two trials revealed a significant decrease of alanine aminotransferase levels after treatment with probiotics (Lactobacillus rhamnosus for 8 weeks; Bifidobacterium+Lactobacillus for 12 weeks), when compared to the placebo. The other variables did not show a statistically significant difference between both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Probiotic therapy has contributed to the reduction of ALT serum levels in pediatric patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which is in line with results found by other authors in scientific literature. Regarding the secondary outcomes, the use of probiotics did not show benefits or damages compared to placebo.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos do uso de probióticos em comparação com placebo, em pacientes pediátricos portadores de doença hepática gordurosa não alcoólica (DHGNA), utilizando parâmetros laboratoriais e ultrassonográficos como desfecho. Métodos: Revisão sistemática da literatura por meio das bases de dados Sistema Online de Busca e Análise de Literatura Médica (MEDLINE) e Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (Lilacs). Foram selecionados ensaios clínicos controlados randomizados publicados até novembro de 2018, sem restrição de língua, com pacientes pediátricos portadores de DHGNA, divididos em dois grupos. Um grupo foi submetido à terapia probiótica e outro grupo recebeu somente placebo. O desfecho primário avaliado foi a comparação dos níveis de alanina aminotransferase (ALT) ao início e no fim do seguimento entre os grupos probiótico e placebo. Os desfechos secundários avaliados foram os níveis de aspartato aminotransferase sérico, índice de massa corpórea, triglicerídeos totais séricos, circunferência abdominal e grau de esteatose hepática à ultrassonografia abdominal. Resultados: Foram recuperados 46 artigos, sendo três incluídos na análise qualitativa, totalizando 128 pacientes. Dois estudos demonstraram redução significativa dos níveis de ALT com o uso de probiótico (Lactobacillus rhamnosus, por oito semanas; Bifidobacterium+Lactobacillus, por 12 semanas), em comparação ao placebo. As demais variáveis avaliadas não evidenciaram diferença estatisticamente significante ente os dois grupos. Conclusões: O uso de probióticos representou redução nos níveis séricos de ALT na esteatose hepática na infância, indo ao encontro dos resultados obtidos por outros autores da literatura científica vigente. No que se refere às variáveis de desfecho secundário, não foi demonstrado benefício ou dano do tratamento de probióticos em relação ao placebo.

Lipid metabolism in ovarian follicular cells supports the preparation of an enclosed oocyte to ovulation. We aimed to compare lipid composition of a dominant large follicle (LF) and subordinated small follicles (SFs) within the same ovaries. Mass spectrometry imaging displayed the differences in the distribution of several lipid features between the different follicles. Comparison of lipid fingerprints between LF and SF by Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionisation Time-Of-Flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry revealed that in the oocytes, only 8 out of 468 detected lipids (1.7%) significantly changed their abundance (p < 0.05, fold change > 2). In contrast, follicular fluid (FF), granulosa, theca and cumulus cells demonstrated 55.5%, 14.9%, 5.3% and 9.8% of significantly varied features between LF and SF, respectively. In total, 25.2% of differential lipids were identified and indicated potential changes in membrane and signaling lipids. Tremendous changes in FF lipid composition were likely due to the stage specific secretions from somatic follicular cells that was in line with the differences observed from FF extracellular vesicles and gene expression of candidate genes in granulosa and theca cells between LF and SF. In addition, lipid storage in granulosa and theca cells varied in relation to follicular size and atresia. Differences in follicular cells lipid profiles between LF and SF may probably reflect follicle atresia degree and/or accumulation of appropriate lipids for post-ovulation processes as formation of corpus luteum. In contrast, the enclosed oocyte seems to be protected during final follicular growth, likely due in part to significant lipid transformations in surrounding cumulus cells. Therefore, the enclosed oocyte could likely keep lipid building blocks and energy resources to support further maturation and early embryo development.

Uterine fluid is an aqueous milieu to which sperm are exposed during their storage and ascent. In this study, a bottom-up proteomic strategy and bioinformatic analysis of hen uterine fluid was performed to improve the understanding of this fluid and its potential role in sperm survival mechanisms. The proteomic data were submitted to ProteomeXchange. Among the 913 proteins identified, 160 are known to be secreted and 640 are referenced in exosomes databases. We isolated exosomes from the avian uterine fluid, analyzed them using electron microscopy, and targeted several exosomes markers (ANXA1/2/4/5, VCP, HSP90A, HSPA8, PARK7, and MDH1) using immunoblotting. Electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry were also used to analyze uterovaginal junctions for the exosomal proteins ANXA4, VCP, and PARK7. Exosomes were observed both at the surface epithelium and inside sperm storage tubules. Our data were compared with two previously published studies on proteomic of hen uterine fluid, and with one study describing the proteomic content of rooster seminal plasma and sperm. In conclusion, we demonstrated for the first time that avian uterine fluid contains exosomes. These may play a key role in preserving sperm functions within the female genital tract. Their presence in the sperm storage tubules may represent an important mechanism regarding interaction between the female genital tract and sperm.

Avian uterine fluid (UF) and uterovaginal sperm storage tubules (SST) are key components in accepting sperm in SST, maintaining sperm function for several weeks, releasing sperm from SST and their ascent through the uterus. To improve the understanding of sperm storage processes requires investigating UF and SST. This study aimed to identify proteins modulated by sperm in the hen's genital tract and to highlight their role during sperm storage. Two genetic lines of hens exhibiting long (F+) or short (F-) sperm storage ability were used. GeLC MS/MS analysis was used to establish a quantitative inventory of proteins regulated after insemination in both lines. The proteomic data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD013514. Immunohistochemistry was used to identify high (ANXA4/ANXA5/OCX32) and low (HSPA8/PIGR) fertility markers in the uterovaginal junction. Our results demonstrated that sperm induced a significant and rapid change in the UF proteomic content and also in the SST epithelium. In F+ hens, mobilization of the ANXA4 protein in the apical part of SST cells after insemination was associated with increased levels of some proteoglycans and binding proteins, and also antimicrobial eggshell matrix protein (OCX32) in the UF. We also observed increased levels of lipid transporters involved in egg formation (VTG1-2, APOA1-4-H). In F- hens, insemination induced increased levels of PIGR in both UF and SST, of ANXA5 in SST, of UF enzymes exhibiting metallopeptidase activity and mucins. In conclusion, sperm induced significant changes in the UF proteomic content. This study also provides evidence that the SST immune system plays a major role in regulating sperm storage.

Ovarian follicle provides a favorable environment for enclosed oocytes, which acquire their competence in supporting embryo development in tight communications with somatic follicular cells and follicular fluid (FF). Although steroidogenesis in theca (TH) and granulosa cells (GC) is largely studied, and the molecular mechanisms of fatty acid (FA) metabolism in cumulus cells (CC) and oocytes are emerging, little data is available regarding lipid metabolism regulation within ovarian follicles. In this study, we investigated lipid composition and the transcriptional regulation of FA metabolism in 3⁻8 mm ovarian follicles in bovine. Using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (MS), 438 and 439 lipids were identified in FF and follicular cells, respectively. From the MALDI-TOF MS lipid fingerprints of FF, TH, GC, CC, and oocytes, and the MS imaging of ovarian sections, we identified 197 peaks and determined more abundant lipids in each compartment. Transcriptomics revealed lipid metabolism-related genes, which were expressed constitutively or more specifically in TH, GC, CC, or oocytes. Coupled with differential lipid composition, these data suggest that the ovarian follicle contains the metabolic machinery that is potentially capable of metabolizing FA from nutrient uptake, degrading and producing lipoproteins, performing de novo lipogenesis, and accumulating lipid reserves, thus assuring oocyte energy supply, membrane synthesis, and lipid-mediated signaling to maintain follicular homeostasis.

Gossypol interferes with reproduction, causing damage to sperm, disrupting the estrous cycle and resulting in embryonic lethality. In females, gossypol administration promotes degeneration of ovarian follicles, but it is unknown whether this effect is direct or indirect. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine whether gossypol interferes with folliculogenesis in vitro in rats, mice and goats. Ovaries from rats and mice and fragments of goat ovaries were grown in cell culture for 24 h or 7 days. Four groups were tested: 0 (control), 5, 10 and 20 µg gossypol/ml. After incubation, the ovaries were fixed and processed for histological analysis. Follicles were classified according to their stage of development as either viable or atretic. It was found that the ovaries of rats, mice and goats cultured with gossypol showed an increase in the proportion of atretic follicles and a consequent reduction in the proportion of viable follicles at all stages of follicular development. Compared to the control group, the viability of all ovarian follicles in the rat, mouse and goat groups was reduced after cultivation for 24 h by 56.9%, 56.5% and 68.0%, respectively, with the highest concentration of gossypol (20 µg/mL), and after seven days, the respective reductions were 65.4%, 65.3% and 88.2%. Thus, it is possible that gossypol may directly affect follicular maturation, and consequently female fertility.

While uterine epithelium secretes eggshell matrix proteins to regulate eggshell structural organization, uterovaginal junction (UVJ) epithelium supports sperm storage in tubules (SST). Here, we examined the presence of OCX36, OC-116 and OC-17 eggshell matrix proteins in SSTs. Two experimental lines of hens displaying either a long (F+ line) or a short (F- line) potential to store sperm were used, before and 24h after insemination. Using immunohistochemistry and western blot, we analyzed the presence of OC-116, OC-17 and OCX36 proteins in the SSTs. Using lectin and calcium staining, we examined the presence in SSTs of Gal/GalNAc (Galactose/N-acetylgalactosamine) and Glc/GlcNAc (Glucose/N-acetylglucosamine) glycans, as well as calcium ions. Our results indicate that in both F+ and F- hens, the eggshell matrix proteins OC-116 and OCX36 were identified in SST cells and lumen, in contact with spermatozoa. The OC-17 protein was found associated with calcium in F+ and F- hens, only in the SST lumen 24h after insemination. Glycans Gal/GalNAc and Glc/GlcNAc were found to be more abundant in the apical cytoplasmic area of the SST cells of F+ hens than in that of F- hens after insemination. This is the first report demonstrating the presence in SSTs of the OC-116, OC-17 and OCX36 eggshell matrix proteins, and their concomitant presence with Gal/GalNAc and Glc/GlcNAc glycans, as well as with calcium. Our results suggest that the OC-116, OC-17 and OCX36 eggshell matrix proteins may be involved in sperm storage.

This study evaluated the expression of bradykinin (BK) in human placenta from healthy and preeclamptic women. This is a non -randomized experimental study, in which we performed histological analysis of placental tissue to observe changes that occur in each kind of placenta as well as immunohistochemical analysis to investigate the expression of bradykinin. We used 'Paleontological Statistics software package for education and data analysis' 3.06 and R for the statistical analysis. The Ethics Committee of the University of Rio Grande do Norte State approved this experiment under protocol number 166370, according to the determinations established by Resolutions 466/12 and 441/11.We found differences between the two kinds of placenta concerning the diameter of the vessels and the rate of cytotrophoblastic invasion. Student's t- test evidenced significant difference (p = 7.6395 x 10-5) indicating greater marking of BK per section in the healthy placenta group. The result of more significant expression of bradykinin in healthy placenta can be used as a starting point for deeper researches aiming to better characterize and quantify this expression.


Este estudo avaliou a expressão de bradicinina em placentas humanas saudáveis e pré-eclâmpticas. Trata -se de um estudo de caráter experimental não randomizado, no qual foi feita uma análise histológica dos tecidos placentários, permitindo a observação das alterações ocorridas em cada tipo de placenta, e a técnica de imuno-histoquímica, a fim de investigar a presença de bradicinina. Foi utilizado o Paleontological Statistics software package for education and data analysis 3.06 para a análise estatística. Este estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética da Universidade do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte sob o protocolo número 166.370, de acordo com as diretrizes estabelecidas nas Resoluções 466/12 e 441/11. Foi possível observar diferenças no diâmetro dos vasos e na invasão citotrofoblástica entre os dois tipos de placentas. O teste t de Student mostrou significância estatística (p = 7,6395 x 10-5) para uma maior marcação de BK por secção no grupo de placentas saudáveis. O resultado obtido com relação à expressão mais significante de bradicinina em placentas saudáveis pode ser visto como precursor de uma pesquisa mais aprofundada, para melhor caracterizar e quantificar essa expressão.

Under stress conditions, cells in living tissue die by apoptosis or necrosis depending on the activation of the key molecules within a dying cell that either transduce cell survival or death signals that actively destroy the sentenced cell. Multiple extracellular (pH, heat, oxidants, and detergents) or intracellular (DNA damage and Ca(2+) overload) stress conditions trigger various types of the nuclear, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), cytoplasmatic, and mitochondrion-centered signaling events that allow cells to preserve the DNA integrity, protein folding, energetic, ionic and redox homeostasis, thus escaping from injury. Along the transition from reversible to irreversible injury, death signaling is highly heterogeneous and damaged cells may engage autophagy, apoptotic, or necrotic cell death programs. Studies on multiple double- and triple- knockout mice identified caspase-8, flip, and fadd genes as key regulators of embryonic lethality and inflammation. Caspase-8 has a critical role in pro- and antinecrotic signaling pathways leading to the activation of receptor interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1), RIPK3, and the mixed kinase domain-like (MLKL) for a convergent execution pathway of necroptosis or regulated necrosis. Here we outline the recent discoveries into how the necrotic cell death execution pathway is engaged in many physiological and pathological outcome based on genetic analysis of knockout mice.

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o desenvolvimento dos compartimentos estomacais de bezerros mestiços submetidos a diferentes dietas líquidas. Foram utilizados 24 bezerros mestiços, distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro tratamentos e seis repetições: Leite integral; 50% Leite integral + 50% de Soro de queijo; 50% Leite integral + 50% de Soro de queijo adicionado de um ovo integral; e 50% Leite integral + 50% de Soro de queijo adicionado de um ovo integral adicionado de biotina. Foram avaliados o consumo de matéria seca, o ganho de peso, o peso absoluto e relativo (ao peso do corpo vazio e peso do estômago completo) dos quatro compartimentos estomacais, além da altura das papilas de quatro regiões do rúmen. As dietas testadas não afetaram nenhuma das características avaliadas, ficando evidenciada uma relação entre o desempenho dos animais e o desenvolvimento dos compartimentos gástricos. O desenvolvimento dos estômagos de bezerros não foi afetado pelas dietas líquidas testadas, sendo, portanto, possível a substituição de 50% do leite integral por soro de queijo.


This research evaluated the influence of different liquid diets on development of the stomach compartments of crossbred calves. It was used 24 crossbred calves distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and six replications: whole milk, 50% whole milk + 50% of cheese whey, 50% whole milk + 50% cheese whey supplemented with a whole egg; whole milk and 50% + 50% of cheese whey a supplemented with a egg added with biotin. I was evaluated the dry matter intake, weight gain, absolute and relative weight (weight of the empty body and weight stomach full) of the four stomach compartments, and papillae height of four rumen regions. The experimental diets did not affect any of the traits, being shown a relationship between animal performance and development of gastric compartments. The development of calf stomachs was not affected by the tested liquid diets, therefore enabling the replacement of 50% of milk for cheese whey.

Cyanide is a ubiquitous substance in the environment. Most of the cyanide absorbed by an animal is detoxified by enzymatic combination with sulfur, thus the detoxification process imposes a nutritional cost. In mammals, interactions among nutrients and toxics may influence the composition of the diet and food intake, as a function of positive or negative post-ingestive feedback. The present work aimed to describe the toxic effects of cyanide, and to determine whether cyanide interferes with diet selection in quail (Coturnix coturnix). A toxicological study was performed with 27 female quails that were assigned to three groups that received by gavage 0, 1.0 or 3.0mg of KCN/kg/day, for 7 consecutive days. The diet selection trial was conducted with 20 female quails, that had access to two separate rations: a conventional quail ration and the same ration supplemented with 1% NaSO(4). During the toxicological study, clinical signs of poisoning and death occurred in a quail treated with cyanide. Histological changes were found only in animals dosed with cyanide, and these consisted of mild hepatic periportal vacuolation, an increased number of vacuoles in the colloid of the thyroid glands, and spongiosis in the mesencephalon. No clinical signs were found in any quail throughout the diet selection trial. There were no significant differences in food consumption or ration preference. In conclusion, exposure to cyanide promotes damage to the liver and central nervous system in quails. In contrast, the ingestion of sulfur by quail was not affected by exposure to cyanide.

Tumor necrosis factor-á (TNF-á) is a multifunctional cytokine involved in host defense, inflammation, apoptosis, autoimmunity, organogenesis and lymphoid microarchitecture. Many of these activities may be explained by the ability of this cytokine to induce distinct signal transduction pathways that recruit regulatory proteins involved in differentiation, cell death or cell proliferation. In this review, we discuss the contribution of caspases -3, -6, -7 and -8, and of cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), cyclin B and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors (CKI p21 and p27), as well as retinoblastoma tumor suppressor in the signaling cascades triggered by TNF-á to induce apoptosis, necrosis and cellular proliferation in the murine cell lines NIH3T3 and WEHI-164 and the human cervical carcinoma cell line HeLa-S3. Based on the findings of many literature reports and our own data, we discussed a model in which caspases are continuously activated throughout the cell cycle and kept at a critical threshold level by IAP (inhibitor of apoptosis) antagonists. Following the release of Smac/Diablo and HtrA2/OMI from mitochondria in response to diverse stimuli, this threshold is overcome and results in amplified caspase activation and cell death. An alternative, caspase-independent mechanism of cell death is induced in NIH3T3 fi broblasts by a combination of TNF and the pan-caspase inhibitor z-VADfmk. This cell death phenotype, known as necroptosis, displays some morphological features of apoptosis and necrosis. Although caspases are critical regulators of the TNF signaling pathway during cellular life and death, the mechanisms involved in the fine regulation of their dual effects remain to be fully elucidated.

Mitochondrial membrane permeabilization is a biochemically well-defined phenomenon that occurs in response to numerous physiological and pathological processes that regulate cell survival. In many situations, mitochondrial membrane permeabilization is triggered by an excess of reactive oxygen species (ROS), Ca2+ overload, and the interference of BH3-only proteins of the BCL-2 family, as well as by activated caspases that can act on components of the inner or outer membrane to cause the opening, assembly and/or activation of membrane mitochondrial permeability transition pores. These pores permit the release of apoptogenic factors such as cytochrome c, apoptosis-inducing factor, Smac/Diablo, HtrA2/Omi and endonuclease G from the intermembrane space to the cytosol where they mediate many of the biochemical and morphological features of apoptosis and necrosis. In this review, we discuss the pharmacological, genetic and biochemical evidence that proteins, protein complexes and membrane structures can form pores through which apoptogenic factors can be released from mitochondria.

Com o objetivo de identificar a microbiota existente no leite de éguas normais ou portadoras de mastite subclínica, coletaram-se amostras (10 a 15 ml) de leite de 38 animais, que foram examinadas pelo teste de Whiteside, após a homogeneização das amostras dos dois tetos de cada animal. Os resultados foram negativos. Os exames microbiológicos realizados em meios de ágar sangue bovino 10 por cento e ágar MacConkey revelaram presença de bactérias do gênero Staphylococcus spp. e Streptococcus spp. A contagem de células somáticas de amostras individuais de cada teto revelou números superiores a 500.000 células/ml de leite em somente 9,3 por cento das 73 amostras de leite examinadas. Os resultados sugerem a realização de novos estudos objetivando-se a padronização do número de células somáticas no leite de éguas.

Talauma ovata (Magnoliaceae) is used for the treatment of diabetes as an infusion prepared from leaves by the population in some parts of Brazil. In the present work this effect was analysed as part of a general screening of the plant. Chemical analysis demonstrated the occurrence of phytosteroids, saponins, alkaloids and tannins in the crude extract. Pharmacological studies failed to demonstrate a hypoglycemic effect of this plant in normoglycemic, hyperglicemic or alloxan-diabetic rats. The low DL50 obtained for this plant strongly suggeste that its consumption by the population may be hazardous.


A Talauma ovata, (Magnoliaceae), planta encontrada na região Sul do Brasil, e conhecida vulgarmente pelo nome de "baguaçu", é recomendada na medicina popular, na forma de chá das folhas, principalmente para o tratamento do diabetes. O presente estudo foi realizado visando analisar, sob os aspectos fitoquímido e farmacológico, a validade do uso medicinal desta planta, como parte de um "screening" mais abrangente. Quimicamente, o extrato de T. ovata é composto de fitoesteróides, saponinas, alcalóides aporfínicos e taninos. No estudo farmacológico não foi constatado a atividade hipoglicemiante do extrato bruto de T. ovato tanto em animais normoglicêmicos, quanto hiperglicêmicos. Além disso, a alta toxicidade observada para esta planta é um inconveniente para seu emprego medicinal peta população.
